Dogs Central's Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy Buyer's Guide

Origin: The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a very unique breed that comes from South Africa; that country's only recognized breed. The breed derives it's name from the dagger-shaped ridge of fur on it's back. It is thought that the breed descends from native ridged dogs known in South Africa since the 16th century. The breed was perfected and popularized after, in the late 1870s, a few of these dogs were acquired by South African big game hunter, Cornelius van Rooyen.  van Rooyen worked for 35 years refining what he called his 'lion dogs.' His recipe for the perfect big game hunting dog included basic Greyhound blood for dogs speed, Pointer blood for scenting ability, and Collie, terrier and Great Dane crosses for endurance, agility and biting power. Despite adding these breeds to the mix, his dogs retained their signature ridge of fur. South African dog fanciers carried on van Rooyen's legacy, introducing the breed to the South African Kennel Club in 1922. The breed has since gained popularity world wide, and is recognized by both the Canadian and American Kennel Clubs in North America.

Temperament: Although reserved with strangers, this breed is even-tempered and affectionate with those he trusts. Loyal protector of hearth and home. Good with children.

Activity level: This breed requires a lot of exercise and loves to run. Not suited to apartment living - the breed does best in a country or suburban setting with plenty of room to run.

Height/Weight: The upstanding Ridgeback male should be 25-27 in (64-69 cm) tall and weigh approximately 75 lb (34 kg). Females measure 24-26 in (61-66 cm) and weigh about 65 lb (29.5 kg).

Coat: Short, thick and shiny.

Colour: Light wheaten to red wheaten. Occasionally has a little white on the chest and on the toes.

Grooming: Occasional brushing or rubdown is all that is required
