The Canaan Dog is a relatively new breed originating in
the Middle East. Also called "Kelev K'naani", the breed was developed by
a pair of scientists and experts on ancient dog breeds; Dr. Rudolph
Menzel and Dr. Rudolphina Menzel, who are world renowned experts on
ancient Pariah dogs.
Pariah dogs are an ancient breed that have been used for
centuries in Israel and Palestine, guarding and herding livestock, and
more recently as working dogs during wartimes, fulfilling guard duties,
detecting land mines and as messengers and Red Cross helpers. The Canaan
Dog was developed from re-domesticated Pariah dog stock, and retains the
intelligence, keen sense of smell, acute hearing and alert demeanor of
it's recent ancestor.
Canaan Dogs are intelligent and easy to train. They
excel in a number of areas, including herding, and tracking. When
socialized with children from an early age, the Canaan Dog makes an
excellent family companion, both devoted and protective of it's home and
family. The breed is fastidiously clean, and easily housebroken, a trait
that stems from the "den" instincts of the Pariah Dog. The breed does
not require a great deal of exercise, and is suitable to homes in either
city or country.
If you are looking for a loving, trainable and unique
family dog, the Canaan Dog may be the breed of choice for you.
