When it comes to looks, charm and intelligence, the loveable little family dog known as the Boston Terrier possesses all of these qualities in abundance! A truly "American" dog, the Boston Terrier is a combination of the best qualities of the Bulldog and the English Terrier, originally developed in the United States in the late 19th century. Boston Terriers are very versatile; they adapt very well to almost any living arrangements - country or city, apartment or mansion. Easily house-trained, Boston Terriers love children and will play with and amuse the little ones for hours. Boston Terriers get along well with other family pets and make great watchdogs! They require only weekly brushing and exercise needs are minimal. Plenty of daily hugs and kisses will keep your adorable Boston Terrier healthy and happy!
Boston Terrier Breed History:
This Boston Terrier breed originated in - where else? - Boston. A combination of the early Bulldog and the Bull Terrier, the Boston Terrier was originally bred for pit fighting but when the blood sport was outlawed, a group of breed fanciers worked to promote recognition of the breed. The first of the Boston Terrier breed to be exhibited made its debut at the Massachusetts Kennel Club show in 1878. The breed went through several name changes before it was granted recognition by the American Kennel Club in 1893 and became known as the Boston Terrier. Early Boston Terriers were much heavier than the current canines but as the breed pared down in size, it gained in popularity and was the most popular breed in the U.S. between 1929 and 1935.
Boston Terrier Breed Description:
Height/Weight: For show purposes, the Boston Terrier breed is divided into three weight classifications: light (under 15 lb/7 kg), middleweight (15 to under 20 lb/9 kg) and heavyweight (20 to under 25 lb/11.5 kg). A sturdy dog, the length of leg should balance with the length of body to produce a square appearance.

Coat: The Boston Terrier sports a coat that is short, smooth, bright and fine in texture.

Color: The Boston Terrier color is brindle or black with white markings that ideally include a white muzzle, blaze over the head, collar, breast, all or part of the forelegs and hind legs below the hocks. The effect is that of a dog decked out in a tuxedo.
Boston Terrier Breed Temperament:
A friendly and lively dog, the Boston Terrier is noted for its excellent disposition and high degree of intelligence.
Boston Terrier Breed Exercise Requirements:
Though the Boston Terrier enjoys activity, he is not a hyper animal. The Boston Terrier's size makes him suitable for most living accommodations. He makes a fine companion and house pet with exercise needs being minimal.
Boston Terrier Breed Grooming Requirements:
Nothing to it. An occasional bath and brushing is all that's needed to keep your Boston Terrier looking it's best.
Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
