From his sad, soulful expression to his exceptional
scenting ability, one would almost mistake the Basset Hound for
a much shorter version of the Bloodhound. The Basset Hound
actually originated in France - the word "Basset" means "low
set" in French. It is thought that the Basset Hound may be a
descendant of the St. Hubert Hound, which is now extinct. Basset
Hounds are sporting dogs with a keen sense of smell and the
ability to cover great distances in a short time. They are often
used by sporting enthusiasts to trail hares, rabbits, deer and
other game. Working in packs, the Basset Hound's solid build and
shorter stature make it perfectly suited to this activity -
especially in dense brush. These traits make a securely fenced
yard an absolute must for the Basset owner, since this breeds'
nose can invariably lead him into all kinds of sticky
situations! Bassets have a short coat, which can be a variety of
colors from black to tan and white, or any combination of these
colors. Grooming requirements are minimal - a good weekly
brushing with a bristle brush or mitt will keep the coat shiny
and free of dead hair. The Basset Hound's eyes and ears need a
bit more attention, and should be cleaned and checked regularly
for debris which could cause irritation or infection. Moderately
active, Basset Hounds require a good walk every day to keep them
fit and happy. Basset Hounds are a good choice for both city or
country living, and are a great choice for families with
children, whether young or older.
